BREATHTAKING UNDERWATER ADVENTURES IN PARADISE

Anaeho’omalu Bay

Anaeho’omalu Bay on the Big Island of Hawaii is another worthwhile place to snorkel while visiting Hawaii. The snorkeling is so good that parents have been known to sit on the shore and watch their children explore marine life for hours.

This is a great place to see marine life such as green sea turtles, parrotfish, surgeonfish, and the giant Hawaiian black-tip shark. The Hawaiian black-tip shark is a creature that can be dangerous to humans if it is provoked, but it rarely is because it feeds on fish. Therefore, if the snorkeler sees a large fish swimming in the marine environment and appears to be having a good time without fear of being eaten by other species of fish, then they know they are in the presence of a Hawaiian black-tip shark. However, they are rarely seen because they are good at hiding and blending in. This is one of the reasons why it is wise not to touch or provoke any marine life; because they may be hiding something that could harm you.

The water in Anaeho’omalu Bay is typically reasonably warm, making it a great place to swim. But beware of waves or large swells because they can make it quite dangerous. The bay is also an excellent spot for some interesting underwater plant life, such as the Fan Coral and Trunk Coral colonies. If you decide to take this snorkeling trip, be sure that you check the tides and water conditions because they can change dramatically. The best time to visit Anaeho’omalu Bay is low tide because you can see more of the bay’s marine life. This is when the sandbar is exposed. Although it can be a little challenging to get to in high tide, it makes for a great snorkeling spot. The water is calm and clear, and plenty of fish are swimming around in the bay. On the south side of the bay is a small sandy beach where you can watch your children play in the sand and swim in the water. On top of all this, there is a small pier for you to sit on. At times you may even see a monk seal resting at the end of it.

Regardless of the amount of time you spend snorkeling in Anaeho’omalu Bay, it would help if you took note of the best places to find marine life. The estuary or mangrove system are two areas that provide a plethora of marine life. In addition, because of their proximity to the bay, there are small schools of fish that school together in areas where there is a lack of predators. These schools provide a critical source for the bay’s fish population. Some of the fish species you might see include Parrotfish, Garibaldi, Hogfish, Yellowtail Snapper, and Spearfish.

Overall this bay is such an excellent place to snorkel; it has become a popular pick by many of our customers who visit the islands. Even though it is not super fancy, it has a unique underwater sea life that is abundant and easy to find – making it a perfect snorkeling spot to see if you are beginning to snorkel or a seasoned pro.
